Two Trees

Green boughs,

Bending beneath tinsel and lights.

Scarred wood,

Stained with blood and sweat.

Two trees:

One marks the beginning –

The other the end.

One brings life –

The other death.

In Bethlehem

The Light of the world is born;

A tree is decked in ornaments.

On Calvary

The Son of God is slain;

A tree is cut, rough hewn,

Nailed together with shame and suffering.

Yet sorrow and joy become one,

As ugly wood

Becomes magnificent coniferous.

He makes the bloodied mess

Stand tall, triumphant.

Through His death, comes life;

He makes the repulsive beautiful.
