A Smile

Hollow cheeked child,

Huddled in an alley –

Shivering, hunger gnawing;

Impatient pedestrians

Kick him aside,

Nobody stops, nobody cares,

Nobody wants this shattered soul –

A discarded remnant of humanity,

Dressed in filthy rags.

Gentle hands cup his chin

Arms cradle his battered frame,

The boy looks up to see a wrinkled face,

And, more wondrous still,

The slow curving of lips –

A tender smile,

Full of love for an unloved boy;

A smile that reaches down

And touches a heart

That will never be the same.
