The Veil

Woman crying head in hands
Mohamad Itani via Flikr

You stare through a blackened veil,

Unable to see clearly,

Yet afraid to be clearly seen.

Terror rumbles in your chest,

But you smother it behind leaden gates,

Locked and bared,

Safe from judging intruders;

Eyes half closed in fear,

Lest in opening them wide,

You discover what is hard to hear –

You are more than clay,

Grey dust scattered on floorboards,

But you won’t lift the veil to see,

To know you aren’t just a wounded mess,

That you could be loved,

If you pulled back the cloak,

And let yourself be known.
