They tell you

They tell you it’s a glorious thing –

This life, this love,

It’s painted on billboards and TV screens,

But this life ain’t nothing but shadows,

Chaotic, messy; it’ll crush you.

This love is harder than it looks,

It costs too much – it hurts too much;

Everything’s broken,

And you don’t know where to begin;

Life is supposed to be a beaten path,

But it’s a maze,

And nothing’s beautiful up close.

Lying on the floor now,

Your aching heart cries out –

If there’s a God

Why does He let you live these lies?

Constantly you face the logic,

Explanations and statistics –

It all makes perfect sense,

Till you see the flaws amid the flawlessness.

It’s unbelievable what is believable,

But can you pick and choose,

Gather shreds of purpose from pages,

Lyrics, and other people’s lives?

They tell you it’s a glorious thing –

This life, this love,

But if you pursue their illusions,

You’ll only chase a myth.

‘Cuz you don’t know what you seek

Until you find it –

And you won’t find it here.
