Strangers

Voices hum in comforting commotion –

People tripping on the stairs,

Spilling coffee on the floor,

And throwing paper like little children,

Up into the studious balconies;

Caught in the contagion of life,

Delirious for just one moment

Of interaction with another.

Life’s unexpected embrace –

Take hold of it with cynical fingers;

In the close confines of a crowded bus,

Take part in the stumbling co-operation,

These strangers: awkward, wrinkled, beautiful –

Every one of them is like you.
